INTRODUCTION:
We have come to the next to last sermon in the life of King of David. In one sense this is a terrible time for David and Israel. In another this is a one of David's moments of greatness. He sins, but he confess that sin and repents and God forgives him.

I) A WILLFUL ACT OF DISOBEDIENCE -
Vs. 1 God is angry with Israel. We do not know exactly why. Some scholars believe it was because of Absolam's rebellion and the people's part in that.

1 Then Satan stood up against Israel and moved David to number Israel.

God permitted Satan to tempt David in order to accomplish his purposes in the people of Israel.

What was so terrible about a census? In Numbers 1 and 26 Israel is numbered. In Exodus 30 we find that the reason for a census is to give a contribution to the Lord. God even tells Moses that giving this contribution will prevent a plague from breaking out among the people.

What was the problem?

A) A SIN OF PRIDE -
This is late in David's life, he has won many great victories. He is feared by all his neighbors. It seems to be a matter of pride for David. He wanted to know how big "his army" was; how much land he owned. This had nothing to do with God or worship or bring money into the house of God. This was all about David. This was an opportunity to boast.

"Pride is the ground in which all the other sins grow," wrote William Barclay, "and the parent from which all the other sins come."

James 4:6 tells us that God resists the proud.

Proverbs 16:18 - Pride goes before a fall.

B) A LACK OF FAITH - Perhaps David knew that his enemies were growing restless in his old age. Perhaps there was some land that he wanted to conquer, and he needed to know if he had the army and resources needed.
