CIT - David receives the consequences of his sin with Bathsheba through the rebellion of Absalom.
Proposition - Sin always brings consequences.
INTRODUCTION:
Hosea 8:7 (NASB95)
7 For they sow the wind And they reap the whirlwind. The standing grain has no heads; It yields no grain. Should it yield, strangers would swallow it up.
The prophet Hosea is describing the nation of Israel. They were the ones who cried out to God as if they cried out to God as if they knew Him. The nation that set up kings but not by me. They walked in their own way - sow the wind; as a result they suffered the consequences - reaping the whirlwind.
David had broken God's law. He committed the sin of adultery, then compounded it with the sin of murder and to make things worse covered it all up and went about his business as if nothing had happened.
Here's another verse -
Galatians 6:7-8 (NASB95)
7 Do not be deceived, God is not mocked; for whatever a man sows, this he will also reap.
8 For the one who sows to his own flesh will from the flesh reap corruption, but the one who sows to the Spirit will from the Spirit reap eternal life.
We are going to cover 5 chapters to get the overall picture of what happens here. Literally we will see the erosion of David's family and the destruction that comes upon them because of his sin.
We will use Nathan's prophesy in 2 Samuel 12:10-12 as an outline for what happens next.
I) VIOLENCE - "The sword shall never depart from your house.:
Last week - we studied the death of David's child.
It seems that everything is going to go back to normal. Maybe Nathan was just an alarmist. Maybe he just didn't understand grace. As time goes on, the business with Uriah and the baby falls into the background of David's life.
