THE BATHSHEBA AFFAIR (10 of 14)
Series: A MAN AFTER GOD'S OWN HEART
Collin Wimberly
II Samuel 11-12
CIT - David sins by committing adultery with Bathsheba.
Proposition - Sin is destructive to the believer.
INTRODUCTION:
ILLUS: Jimmy Swaggert - He will be remembered as much for his moral failure as for his great preaching and tremendous ministry.
David was a man who killed Giants, defeated enemies, was Israel's most famous king. Yet, in many respects he is remembered for this sad chapter in his life's story. Movies have made about this, books written, and sermon preached about it. I wonder if David might have made a different decision that fateful day if he had only known what the effect of this sin would be.
I) THE SIN -
Vs. 1 - Problem one: He was not where he should have been.
Vs. 2 - Problem Two - He had too much time on his hands. It was evening and he was just now getting out of bed.
"Our greatest battles don't usually come when we are working hard: they come when we have some leisure, when we've got time on our hands, when we're bored."
"the roof of the King's house" Probably a large porch built off of his bedchamber.
" He saw a beautiful woman bathing." Now the story could and should have ended here. David was tempted, but temptation is not a sin. He could have looked away, walked back into his bed-chambers, and this episode would not have happened.
But is doesn't stop there - he calls from his servant, who tries to discreetly tell him that this woman is another man's husband. I believe this unnamed servant is wiser than David here. He is saying, don't go there king.
David looked and he lusted. He dreamed and he fantasized. The first sin he committed was in his mind.
Matthew 5:28 (NASB95)
28 but I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman with lust for her has already committed adultery with her in his heart.
We are to flee from sin. Some temptations are too big for us, their attraction is too ...
