INTRODUCTION:
With the death of Saul a new chapter begins in the life of David. There is a new king in Israel. He will be known as a man after God's own heart.
He casts a long shadow over the pages of the OT and is mentioned frequently in the New. He was a great king. The greatest that Israel ever had.
Yet he was also a man with weakness. I love the Bible because it doesn't gloss over those weaknesses. It would have been easy to make him a superman. A man on a higher plane of existence that the rest of us mere mortals. The Bible presents David warts and all.
That's important for us. In David's life we see a type or an illustration of Christ. We see wonderful principles to be emulated.
However, we also see pitfalls and problems to avoid.
Let's do a quick overview of the rest of David's life here at this halfway point.
I) THE POSITIVES- THE GOOD STUFF
Great things are on the horizon for David. It's amazing that when he become the King of Judah and reigns in Hebron, He is only about 22 or 23! For a young man he has experienced a lot!
When he is made King over all Israel in chp. 5 He is only 30 years old.
For the first fifty years of his life, David will live with integrity and holiness. The last 20 years are a downhill slide.
Notice the good stuff that we see in this new king.
A) SPIRITUALLY - He sought the Lord. 2:1 and 5:19
Contrast that with Saul who sought God and He would not answer. God does answer David.
David was a man of prayer.
David was willing to wait on the Lord - God instructed him to go to Hebron. He was made king only of Judah. The rest of Israel followed Ishobsheth. This went on for 7 ½ years.
It would have been easy to get in a hurry and get ahead of God. But he waited. There was upheaval and uncertainty in Israel. It must have been difficult to watch.
