Context: Supremacy of Christ in all things, including our Redemption
This theme is important because the world of first-century Christians and our world both try to undermine the supremacy of Christ. There is a marked difference and conflict between the Lord Christ who reigns as Creator and Redeemer and those who do not acknowledge His Lordship. They will say, Jesus is NOT our king, we will NOT bow down to him, nor will we even acknowledge his existence.
Whereas Christians do bow down to Christ and believe He is the only God, to the point of sacrificing their lives for His Kingdom and His will.
In Colosse, the Christians were being undermined and influenced by captive philosophy and empty deceit. This came in the form of: human tradition and elemental spirits of this world
people passing judgment on Christians based on
- questions of food and drink
- regards to festivals or new moon or Sabbaths
- asceticism:
- worship of angels
- going on in detail about visions, puffed up without reason by sensuous minds
- rules about do not taste, do not touch
?these things have an appearance of wisdom in promoting self-made religion and asceticism but are actually of no value in stopping the indulgence of the flesh.
So the false teachings in Colosse were meant to keep people clean, undefiled, and from indulging in sensual pleasures of the flesh. So the goals may have been admirable but the substance and motivations were not. Instead of holding fast to Christ to fight off the indulgences of the flesh, they just made a bunch of rules. Instead of getting to the heart, they were just getting to the external behaviors. This is nothing new. We often create rules for ourselves when we are trying to stop a bad habit or indulging in certain ungodly desires. We get rid of the television, we stop scrolling on social media, we freeze our credit cards in ...
