THE ROAD TO ENDOR (7 of 14)
Series: A MAN AFTER GOD'S OWN HEART
Collin Wimberly
I Samuel 28
CIT- Men do strange and crazy things when they get away from God.
INTRODUCTION:
"Oh, the road to Endor is the oldest road,
and the craziest road of all;
Straight it runs through the witch's abode,
As it did in the days of Saul.
And nothing is changed of the sorrow in store
For such as go down the road of Endor."
Richard Kipling wrote this some years ago. It's still a crazy road that leads to Endor.
People will do strange things when they get away from God.
I) THE ROAD TO ENDOR BEGINS AT A PHILISTINE WAR CAMP-
Vs. 3-6
The armies of Israel and their archenemies are facing each other across the valley of Esdraelon, the valley that we know as Armegeddon.
A) SAUL'S FEAR- He was afraid and greatly troubled. Why? Two reasons.
1) A military reason- The army of the Philistine's appeared undefeatable.
2) A spiritual reason- Whenever Saul got away from God, he became fearful. Before the Spirit of the Lord came upon him as King, he hid himself and was afraid. When the Spirit of God left him he feared Goliath, and now the Philistines. Apply: When we take our eyes of God and put them on the situations and circumstances we face, we can become quite fearful.
3) What happens when circumstances come against you? D.L. Moody said that circumstances can either ruin you or make you. Hudson Taylor, the founder of the China Inland Mission said, "Circumstances do one of two things; if we let them come on the outside and put Jesus between us and the circumstances, the circumstances will bring Jesus closer to us. If we put the circumstances between me and Jesus, the circumstances will put Jesus farther away from us and we'll feel there's no help.
B) GOD'S SILENCE- Vs. 6 When he inquired of the Lord-when he asked God what to do; God would not answer. Three basic ways God spoke in those days.
Dreams and visions/ casting lots/ prophets.
