What is Faith?
Heb. 11:1 Faith is not a power. It's not some mystical, ethereal feeling.
*True faith believes that God will do as He promised. No matter the circumstances or the consequences. No matter how helpless the situation. No matter how great the enemy.
Faith is not a blind leap-Faith is the step of confidence. Knowing God will sustain and carry me simply because He said He would.
One of the best examples of faith bringing the victory is found in I Samuel 17. The story of David and Goliath.
I) THE OPPONANT OF FAITH
Philistines occupied and gave their names to the SW portion of Palestine. Constant threat to the Israelites from the days of Solomon.
They held a mountain-Israel held a mountain. A valley stood between them.
From the ranks of the Philistines comes a terrible figure. He strides down the side of the mountain, across the fertile valley and takes a stand in the center. He is a terrible foe indeed.
*Some of you feel as if you are on the battle-lines spiritually this morning. Goliath means captivity. He came with the purpose of defeating and captivating the Israelites.
A) HE WAS ENORMOUS! His height was 6 cubits and a span = 9 feet 9 inches tall. Armor was plates of brass lying one upon another-like scales. Called Scale armors. Weighed around 148 pounds. His javelin was 5 feet long and its iron head weighed around 25 pounds
