Title: Summer of Psalms (1)
Series: Summer of Psalms
Author: Jeff Ecklund
Text: Psalm 15
1 O Lord, who may abide in Your tent? Who may dwell on Your holy hill?
2 He who walks with integrity, and works righteousness, And speaks truth in his heart.
3 He does not slander with his tongue, Nor does evil to his neighbor, Nor takes up a reproach against his friend;
4 In whose eyes a reprobate is despised, But who honors those who fear the Lord; He swears to his own hurt and does not change;
5 He does not put out his money at interest, Nor does he take a bribe against the innocent. He who does these things will never be shaken.
This Psalm I want to unpack this morning has some of the same elements of Psalm 24 that Pastor Joel taught on last Sunday.
First of all, after reading this...and if this is what it takes to dwell in God's presence...pretty hard to measure up!
So a couple things before we go into it.
First, this is a Psalm of David and is written to a people who are traveling to the temple to worship.
Some call it a Psalm of "aspirations" which means they were to inspire travelers to prepare their hearts on the way, take a pause maybe and consider their conduct and heart positions etc...As the priest would sing this to them as they approached.
Israel took approaching God in worship as a very serious undertaking. Not to be done without thought or contemplation...they would prepare body, mind and spirit.
I remember back a few years ago when church was more formal. Suits, ties possibly...best shoes etc...
You knew that Sunday morning was going to be different. Maybe mom made you take a bath on Saturday night, get your clothes lined out. Even the ride in the car was different, what you talked about was different.
Maybe more of a formal affair and honestly sometimes "religion" will do that to you.
But there is something inside of us that even while we may be more "informal" today and more celebration than somber...there stirs inside ...
