I've entitled this message, "God's Almanac." Our younger generations probably don't know what an almanac is, but for those who are of an older persuasion, almanacs were a pretty big deal. They were a big deal in the early days of our country-in colonial America. But they actually go back 4,000 years to the Egyptians who decided that certain things should be written down and saved for future generations who would probably run into similar things. Having a recorded history would therefore be of value.

Now the almanac really became big in our country right before the Revolutionary War. In fact, probably the most famous almanac was called "Poor Richard's Almanac," started by Benjamin Franklin in 1739. He believed this would be important to a fledgling continent. All the explorers and others who came to America didn't know much about their new land, so Franklin wrote down things like when the seasons began and ended, when crops should be planted and harvested, as well as things about the various meteorological events that showed patterns over time. He stopped doing the almanac only because he was more needed to serve his country.

After Franklin, another almanac was created to replace it that was called "The Old Farmers' Almanac." It actually still exists today. You can find it online or even in some grocery stores. It will give you all the information about previous years, then tells you what you can look forward to in 2024. It would have told you that on Monday, April 8, 2024, there would be a total eclipse and where it could be viewed. This is the kind of thing that almanacs were made to do.

Another almanac was famous-Gray's Sports Almanac. This was for my generation. In the second "Back to the Future" movie, it was the point of contention. The bad guy got the almanac from an earlier date and then goes into the future to bet on fut ...
