INTRODUCTION:

Last year I was pulling into our church parking lot. Not paying too close attention, I ran over the median dividing the incoming from outgoing lanes. I ran over it hard. It jarred my teeth and I thought for sure that I must have blown out a tire and ruined the alignment. The FIRST thing I did was to look around and see if there was anyone else around who might have SEEN what I did. And, of course, there was. Scott Carter happened to be parked about 50 yards away with a perfect line of sight to my humiliation. That is an example of the Law of Probability" which states: "The probability of being watched is directly proportional to the stupidity of your act." Scott doesn't remind me of it often, but often enough. Today I want to talk about the BUMPY journey.

In Luke 15 Jesus told the parable of the Prodigal Son. This is a story that illustrates the bumps, detours, and roundabouts that characterize the spiritual journey of many if not most believers. Following Jesus is not a straight line from New Birth to Heaven, and it's not smooth sailing. It's a bumpy journey. Let's see the five bumps in our journey today.

I. THE FAR COUNTRY

Luke 15:11-13 "A man had two sons. The younger told his father, 'I want my share of your estate now before you die.' So his father agreed to divide his wealth between his sons. A few days later this younger son packed all his belongings and moved to a far country, and there he wasted all his money in wild living."

In this story, "the far country" represents the son's rebellion against his father, his father's love, and his father's values. This is the younger son's willful separation from the father.
