INTRODUCTION: On November 19, 1863, the president of the United States delivered a speech during the Civil War at the dedication of the Soldier's National Cemetery in Adam's County, Pa. It was four and a half months after the Union armies defeated Confederate forces at that location, the Civil War's deadliest battle. Who was the president? Abraham Lincoln. What was the name of his speech? The Gettysburg Address. There are many memorable lines in the ten sentences that make up the address. Here's the one I want you to complete: "The last full measure of what?" Devotion. What did Lincoln mean by "Their last full measure of devotion"? He meant that they had died. "From these honored dead we take increased devotion to that cause for which they gave the last full measure of devotion - that this nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom."
On Memorial Day we pause to remember with gratitude those who gave the last full measure of their devotion in the service of the armed forces of the United States of America. The total number of Americans killed in all US wars is over 1.1million.
We Christians have our own cause to which we are devoted. All Christians have dual citizenship. Our secondary citizenship is in our home country - for most of us that is the United States of America. Our PRIMARY citizenship is in the Kingdom of God - the Church. Over 70 million Christians have been martyred for the Kingdom of God over the last two millennia. More than half of those died in the 20th century. They, too, gave the last full measure of devotion.
