Forward With Repentance (7 of 8)
SERIES: Forward
STEVE JONES
Acts 2
Sermon Summary: 1) Forward to Lordship. 2) Forward to godly sorrow. 3) Forward to faith.
INTRODUCTION: Jim Marshall was a defensive lineman for the Minnesota Vikings from 1961 to 1979. On October 25, 1964, Marshall recovered a fumble and ran it 66 yards to the end-zone. There was only one problem. He ran the wrong way and scored a safety for the opposing team. Sports Illustrated author John Rolfe has named it the most embarrassing moment in NFL history.
We all run in the wrong direction sometimes. The important thing is, once we realize we're headed in the wrong direction, turn around. Our sermon series is "Forward". Today we want to move forward by turning around. The Bible calls this, repentance.
Repentance is a change of mind, a TURNING from one attitude or viewpoint to another. Let's take a deeper dive into Peter's Pentecost sermon to help us understand how to "Repent Forward." Peter makes three interesting repentance CONNECTIONS.
I. REPENT FORWARD TO LORDSHIP
"God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified, both LORD and Christ." When the people heard this, they were cut to the heart and said to Peter and the other apostles, "Brothers, what shall we do?" Peter replied, "Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit"
(Acts 2:36-38).
When we do the "repentance turn around" we are turning toward Jesus as our Lord. If you are a Christian today, please repeat after me: "Jesus is Lord." Let's fill that declaration with some concrete New Testament content.
Mark Moore: "In the modern church, 'Jesus is Lord' rolls easily off the tongue. But those words have been stripped of their original offense. The saying is little more than a Hallmark slogan."
