INTRODUCTION: In his book, "They Smell Like Sheep" Volume 2, Lynn Anderson says "We see at least two broad categories of leaders growing on the pages of the Bible: Banyan Tree leaders and Mesquite Bush leaders. An old Indian proverb says, "Nothing grows under the banyan tree." Thick foliage on a banyan keeps sun and rain off any seedlings that fall near the tree. Consequently, banyans don't grow in thickets. Rather, you see on towering alone here, another standing way over there.
Not so, mesquite bushes! Their long taproots reach deep down to draw subterranean moisture. They have little foliage to block the sun and rain, so most seeds they drop germinate quickly. Plus, each bush throws off bushels of seeds. Even if a seed falls on a hot rock, a mesquite bush may spring up there by the end of the season. Consequently, like rabbits, they multiply swiftly and then multiply again and again.
God calls a few Banyan Tree leaders - strong, stand-alone persons who tend to tower over those around them. One of these led every major move of God in history. Think of Moses or Joshua, Paul or Peter. Today such people lead movements or megachurches. But because they usually do not multiply themselves, they are few and far between..
No one need aspire to Banyan Tree leadership. God takes care of that. Banyans emerge only by his call and anointing, not by human career plans.
Anyone, however, can aspire to Mesquite Bush spiritual leadership. This is the kind God calls most. Mesquites do not necessarily stand out against the sky and rarely, if ever, lead movements or mega-churches. But they're very good at producing and multiplying healthy, growing disciples of Jesus, who in turn keep multiplying. Biblical leadership aims ...
