Avoiding Foolish Worship (5)
Series: Chasing the Wind-A Study of Ecclesiastes
Josh Malone
Eccl. 5:1-7
Why have we gathered today?
- You may come as an OBSERVER- wallflower, curious, checking things out
- You may come as a CONSUMER.- Looking to see what's in it for you today.
- You may come as a CRITIC- Evaluating, scoring
For the Christian there is only one appropriate option... we come as a WORSHIPPER.
- In our day of your way right away, of Yelp and Google ratings where everyone is a critic, with our tendencies to be spectators instead of participators we must be reminded from time to time that this is a WORSHIP SERVICE.
- We want non-Christians to come and experience Christian worship, experience hospitality, be exposed to the gospel. We want Christians to come and WORSHIP.
However in my lifetime I've been consumeristic at times, I've simply observed, I've been critical. --- I've likely slept in worship, I've played during worship, I've daydreamed in worship.--- Confession... I've done things beside worship... during worship.
- Maybe you have... maybe you find yourself being more consumeristic, critical, or simply an observer--- truth is... we've all messed this up at some point because we are SINNERS.
There is a right and a wrong way to worship. Worship has a WEIGHT TO IT. This is not a flippant thing. We are dealing with God. We don't gather this morning to simply gaze a stage, a speaker, a musician, to perform rituals. We gather to gaze at God in His Word, to worship Him. This is not light thing, no trivial thing, this is a weighty thing... for God is glorious.
