Wisdom for a Better Life (7)
Series: Chasing the Wind-A Study of Ecclesiastes
Josh Malone
Eccl. 7:1-29
In Ecclesiastes we have been seeing the world as it is. Life under the sun, in a fallen world, is filled with struggles, pain, and sin. People chase after empty promises, pursuing things as their god instead of pursuing God. In chapter 7 the writer's focus begins to shift toward practical application.
- We may need to be reminded that Ecclesiastes is wisdom literature: Job, Psalms, Proverbs, Song of Solomon, and Ecclesiastes are the wisdom lit. of the OT. When we read these books we should gain wisdom for living.
Chapter 7 of this book has an intense focus on wisdom. One of the major themes of the chapter are quite simply that some things are better than others. This writer wants to help us live under the sun, in this fallen world... WISELY. He wants us to have a better life than we would if we lived like a fool.
In our current cultural climate we could use wisdom. We are in difficult times as a nation. People made in the image of God, dead. We've experienced it in our city and now other places. There is a lot of rhetoric going around. Words are many in times like these. We need to be the people, that when we speak... we speak wisely and lovingly. Our neighbors are hurting, they are scared, and things are a hot mess. We need truth. We need love. We need Jesus and we need His wisdom.
Chapter 7 is to help us to live wisely. He shares with us what's better. He focuses us on wise living, considering God, reflecting on human depravity. We need wisdom, we need God, and we need to be mindful of our own sinfulness and the broken world we are in.
