Ecclesiastes 2:1-26

One of the most famous rock songs of the last several decades is the Rolling Stones, "I Can't Get No Satisfaction." Though I try, I try, I try, and I try... I can't get no satisfaction.

- It is unfortunate that it seems our cultural heroes, many of these people are not happy. They have fame, fortune, freedom... and it seems just like with everyday joe's many of them still struggle with a search for more.

- We read of people dying of accidental drug overdoses or suicides. We read of people seeking treatment for drug and alcohol addictions.

My point is this... no matter how much or little money, fame, power, or pleasures you have ... true and lasting satisfaction, a sense of meaning and purpose, something that can bear the weight of death and eternity... cannot be found there. --- However, satisfaction, meaning, contentment, purpose, can be found but it can't be found where it was never meant to be.

SEEKING SATISFACTION

- Seeking Satisfaction in Pleasures (2:1-11)

I said in my heart, "Come now, I will test you with pleasure; enjoy yourself." But behold, this also was vanity.

He is going to test himself, he is going to see if anything is truly fulfilling and provides meaning, helps him make sense of his fleeting life and he test himself with "pleasure."

- The Heb. word for translated pleasure means JOY or JUBILATION. -- The idea is he going to see if he can find contentment through indulging in whatever brings him joy.

- He is seeking from pleasure what pleasure is not meant to give, he's seeking from these things what they are not meant to give. He goes seeking....

- THROUGH EXPERIENCING
