Judges 16:22-31

In those days there was no king in Israel and every man did that which was right in his own eyes. Our study of Judges is the story of Israel's rebellion and their longing for a king. But this book, like the whole of Scripture, is ultimately about the Lord Jesus.

Judges is preparing us for a coming king, the Lord Jesus. Properly understood, tonight's text is one of the most profound scenes in the Bible. For it speaks of a victory that comes by the doorway of death. So, tonight I want to simply label the message, "Victory through Death." (Judges 16:22-31)

From the days of the Alamo to the storming of the beaches of Normandy, there is something noble, even desirable, about a soldier laying down his life in the face of certain death.

There is a sense in which EVERY soldier puts his life on the line for the good of country. Yet there is a profound difference in the warrior who puts his life on the line, hoping to come home and the one who puts his life on the line knowing they will not.

This thought of finding victory through death is a recurring theme in military history. And it's the back-story on the closing scene from the story of Samson.

For Samson brings victory through the death of the deliverer. And it reminds us of an even greater victory won by a greater Deliverer...THAT One dying, not for His own sin, but for mine.

I hope we can see a glimpse of our Lord as we find Jesus, even in this otherwise dark section of Judges. And I hope we will also be reminded that God is not through using a man so long as there is still breath in that man's body. And further, that God can still use a man's LIFE, even after that man has DIED.

1. A great sadness at this scene (22-25)
