Judges 15
In those days there was no king in Israel and every man did that which was right in his own eyes. Our study of Judges is the story of Israel's rebellion and their longing for a king. But this book, like the whole of Scripture, is ultimately about the Lord Jesus.
Judges is preparing us for a coming king, the Lord Jesus.
This is the 4th lesson in the longer narrative about Samson. And it involves one of the more familiar scenes. In Judges 15, Samson kills 1,000 Philistines with the jawbone of a donkey.
I'm reminded of the story told by the late Sam Cathey. Preaching in this pulpit years ago, he told of being invited to preach at a Southern Baptist meeting of some kind. In that day, the liberals and conservatives were fighting. Some things never change.
It seems that the committee that invited him to speak was at odds with the moderator of the meeting. So when the moderator introduced Dr. Cathey, he said, "Our next speaker is Sam Cathey. I did not invite him. I would not have invited him. And I take no responsibility for whatever he might say."
Dr. Cathey took the pulpit and said, "I now know what the Philistines must have felt like. For I too have just been smitten with the jawbone of a donkey." Only Papa Sam stayed in the King James translation, if you know what I mean.
In more ways than one, that story sets up my title. Because tonight, I want you to see that When You Fight Fire with Fire Everybody Gets Burned, (Judges 15)
I read recently about a Quaker who was milking his cow. Quakers, as you probably know, are known for their passivity. They are taught and trained to not show their anger.
One day, the milk cow was taking advantage of the pacificst nature of the old Quaker.
The farmer had milked a whole bucket full when the cow intentionally knocked it over. The Quaker got another bucket.
