Judges 13:24-25

In those days there was no king in Israel and every man did that which was right in his own eyes. Our study of Judges is the story of Israel's rebellion and their longing for a king. But this book, like the whole of Scripture, is ultimately about the Lord Jesus.

Judges is preparing us for a coming king, the Lord Jesus. And tonight in the birth of Samson, we see a beautiful foreshadowing of Bethelem and beyond, in a message about the birth of a deliverer. (Judges 13:24-25)

Andrea and I are blessed with 4 kids. And I have special nicknames for each of them:

Michaela was born in December. I call her Snowflake. Andrew was a morning baby. I call him Drewster. I gave Matthew the name, "Buckshot," long before I knew how much he would love to hunt.

But it's the nickname for our 15 year-old Sarah, that has become the subect of family folklore. At that time, I was taking Michaela, then 5 years old, to lunch every Thursday. One day, I mentioned that I needed a special name for Baby Sarah. I ended up with SUNSHINE. Green with envy, Michaela said, "No, just plain Sarah."

That's a fitting name for a boy who was born at a dark time in Israel's history and whose birth would begin the process of shining the light of Deliverance.

And as we look for glimpses of the Lord Jesus, there is already a small glimpse of the One whose birth in Bethlehem's manger would pierce through the blackness of our sin and depravity.

For when Jesus came, the people walking in darkness truly saw a great light. And we can see at least a faint flicker of that light in the birth of little Sunshine, the birth of a deliverer.
