Judges 13:1-14
In those days there was no king in Israel and every man did that which was right in his own eyes. Our study of Judges is the story of Israel's rebellion and their longing for a king. But this book, like the whole of Scripture, is ultimately about the Lord Jesus.
Judges is preparing us for a coming king, the Lord Jesus. And tonight, on the some more of the clean, white pages of your Bibles, we are reminded of Jesus. As we see the events that precede the birth of the last deliverer in Judges, I want to label the message, "The Beginning of the End." (Judges 13:1-14)
Just like the close of chapter 12, most of us have never heard a sermon from these 8 verses of Scripture. Even the sermon series on the life of Samson rarely begin with these verses that occur before he was even born.
Samson is the last of the judges, and arguably the best known of the judges. So this text is the beginning of the end of the period of the judges. We are basically 100 years away from the coronation of Saul as the first king of Israel. Samon's birth is at the end of this chapter, is indeed, the beginning of the end.
But I have something else in mind with this title. For the word, "end" also speaks of the "purpose or goal" of something.
The Westminster Shorter Catechism asks, "What is the chief end of man?" That is, what is man's purpose? The answer given is, "to glorify God and to enjoy Him forever."
And truly, if that is your END...if your goal, aim, and purpose is to glorify God and enjoy Him forever, then there are some things you must BEGIN to do in this life.
The good news is, it's never too late to BEGIN to have that END.
