Judges 12:8-15

In those days there was no king in Israel and every man did that which was right in his own eyes. Our study of Judges is the story of Israel's rebellion and their longing for a king. But this book, like the whole of Scripture, is ultimately about the Lord Jesus.

Judges is preparing us for a coming king, the Lord Jesus. And tonight, on the some of the clean, white pages of your Bibles, we are reminded of Jesus by a bunch of nobodies. (Judges 12:8-15)

Most of us have never heard a sermon from these 8 verses of Scripture. In fact, it's safe to say that unless you've been in a church where the pastor was preaching through this book, you probably don't have anything written in the margin beside the close of Judges 12.

And even if your pastor preached the "highlights" of Judges, I mean unless he was going verse-by-verse, this passage would not have made the highlights reel. These verses are, in many ways, some of the lowlights of the book, except for the fact they are in a narrative that ultimately points us to the Light of the World, the Lord Jesus.

Here, in the close of Judges 12, we are introduced to a trio of unknown judges. In his commentary, John Butler calls these three men nongovernmental, nondescript, and nonproductive.

If you had lived in that time, the biggest names in the world would have been Ibzan, Elon, and Abdon. For 25 years, more than ¼ of the average lifespan, you wouldn't have found a bigger name.

Yet today, you'd be hard pressed to find someone name their son Ibzan, Elon, or Abdon. If they do have those names, it's almost certainly NOT because they've been named after these guys.

In other words, I don't think the parents of Elon Musk had this old judge in mind when they named their billionaire son.

Now before all the powderpuff Christians get upset that I'm describing these men as "a bunch of nobodies," I'm just borr ...
