Judges 10:1-5

In those days there was no king in Israel and every man did that which was right in his own eyes. Our study of Judges is the story of Israel's rebellion and their longing for a king. But this book, like the whole of Scripture, is ultimately about the Lord Jesus.

If you've ever raised a teenager, you are familiar with the expression, "Son, move out now while you still know everything."

Or maybe you heard about the young man who was graduating from high school. When someone asked about his plans he said he was tired of being told what to do, what to wear, etc. so he was going to join the Marines.

My own testimony is similar to famed humorist Mark Twain who once commented that at 20, he thought his dad was a fool. By age 25, he thought his dad was the smartest man on the planet. He marveled at how much his daddy had learned in 5 short years

Well, the truth is, most of the time, minors have need to learn from others and they RARELY have something everyone else needs to learn.

But in the opening of Judges 10, we read about 2 minors. They are not minors in terms of chronological age. They are minors in the sense that they are minor judges. And they teach some valuable lessons, some gold nuggets of truth we would be wise to examine.

1. The short list

Just like the OT has what we call major and minor prophets, there are major and minor judges. And just like their counterparts in the office of prophet, these minor judges are not minor in terms of their impact or importance. They are minor in the sense that we know very little about them.

These five verses are "fly-over" country in our Bibles. You have likely never even heard of Tola or Jair, much less heard a sermon about their ministry.
