Judges 3:5-11

It is one of the most iconic theme songs of TV history. America first heard it on September 26, 1969. That's when we first learned the story of a lovely lady who was bringing up 3 very lovely girls. All of them had hair of gold like their mother, the youngest one in curls.

But that wasn't all. It was also the story of a man named Brady who was busy with 3 boys of his own. They were 4 men living all together, yet they were all alone.

'Til the one day when the lady met this fellow and they knew that it was much more than a hunch that this group must somehow form a family, that's the way they all became the Brady Bunch.

Just from the theme song itself, viewers were introduced to the major characters, the backdrop, and the general theme of the show.

In the same way, these 7 verses serve as a bit of a theme song for the book of Judges. The major themes are pictured here. The story line is symbolized here. And the major characters are introduced here.

Each of these characters will be with us, at least in type, for the remainder of the book. For in these verses we read the story of:

The rebellious people of God
The wicked temptations of the world
The consequences of sin, and
The gift of a deliverer

Or as we have noted, here's the story of Sin, Suffering, Supplication, and Salvation.

In other words, THIS story is OUR story. And HERE'S THE STORY.

1. The story of shameful fornication (5-7)

Throughout the word of God, disobedience to God is frequently compared to immorality. As the Bride of Christ, with Christ as our Groom, unfaithfulness to Him is rightly compared to spiritual adultery.

We have already seen this dark analogy in the book of Judges back in chapter 2 and will see it 2 more times in Judges 8.
