Title: The Vine and the Branches
Author: Marvin Patterson
Text: John 15:1-11
I'm worried about you always being at the bottom of your class," said the father to his son.
"Don't worry Dad," he replied. "They still teach the same thing at both ends."
Introduction:
We are still in Thursday Night, and the disciples and Jesus have left the upper room. They are headed toward the Garden of Gethsemane, where Jesus often went to pray! It will be here in the Garden of Gethsemane that Judas will betray the Lord for 30 pieces of silver! Jesus knows what is going to happen, and yet He continues towards the Garden where He will be arrested! He is still teaching and training the disciples to be the church that Jesus came to establish! In this passage God talks about fruit bearing, and how we can see God do marvelous things in our life! What a blessing to be a child of God, following in the will of God for our lives! With that in mind, let us see what Jesus teaches about how God prunes us of the bad things in our life, so that we can do more good things!
This passage is directed to believers, to those who are already in Christ. Jesus is not talking about how a person gets saved. He is not actually talking about salvation at all in this passage. Rather, He is talking about fruit-bearing, and that is the next word we wish to mark. Fruit is mentioned six times in the first ten verses. We will find as we go further that there are three degrees of fruit-bearing: fruit, more fruit, and much fruit. The whole theme here is fruit-bearing.
