A reporter was interviewing an old man on his 100th birthday. "What are you most proud of?" he asked. "Well, "said the man, "I don't have an enemy in the world." "What a beautiful thought! How inspirational!" said the reporter. "Yep," added the centenarian, "outlived every last one of them."

As believers, while our enemies have been defeated, we will not out live them. Rather, we are required to live out our faith in the presence of our enemies. No one ever said following Christ would be easy. Every day we face obstacles to our faith and encounter enemies of our faith. There are always factors that militate against a life of faith.

There will always be hindrances to the good life, the abundant life.

While Jesus can provide a fruitful joy-filled life there, there is someone else who seeks to take it from us. In John 10, a passage where Jesus describes Himself as the Good Shepherd who lays down His life for the sheep, He warns His followers that "the thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy," but then He offers His Word of contrast and encouragement. While the "thief comes to steal kill and destroy" Jesus says, "I have come that they may have life and have it more abundantly."

Our Good Shepherd makes it possible for us to live joyfully and victoriously in the face of spiritual dangers. We find this beautifully illustrated in the 23rd Psalm. As we read that psalm together, our focus will be on verse 5.
