The late great jazz musician Louis Armstrong recalled that when he was a boy in Louisiana, an old woman asked him to get her a bucket of water. He said, I went down to the spring, and I started to dip that bucket when I saw a pair of the meanest eyes I've ever seen staring right at me. Louis jumped up ran back to the house and that old woman said, "Louis where is my bucket of water?" He said, "Miss Hallie Mae, I can't' et you any water. There's a big ole alligator in that pond." She said, "Louis, that alligator has been there for years. That ole critter is probably just afraid of you as you are of it." To which Louis replied, "Miss Hallie Mae, if that alligator is as afraid of me as I am of him, then that water ain't fit to drink."

Fear is a part of life. Fear is not necessarily a bad thing. It can be beneficial.

- Fear can protect us because it makes us aware of the danger around us.

- It creates a sense of caution which causes us to evaluate a situation more carefully.

- It keeps us from being too rash and careless.

Fear can also create confusion and bring harm. It can cause us to crumble and fold. It can bring perspective or paralysis to our life. Regardless of its benefits or harm, fear is part of life. We have all known and know fear. We all live with some measure of fear.

- We have phobias (spiders, snakes, heights, crowds).

- We are afraid because financial situation, the economy, job-markets, unexpected bills, or retirement. Fear job market and financial security.

- We fear certain health diagnosis.

- We carry a measure of fear for our children. Will they be healthy, will they be able to make it on their own, will they be Godly or end up warped and wounded.

- There are times in my life I fear losing my family to some accident and those random fears can be overwhelming.

- We just fear the unknown.
