Peter is someone that I read with interest and try to keenly listen to, because I identify with him so closely. Like him, I have the ability to mess up.

Who is Peter speaking to? His heart is like the heart of Jesus. Jesus said, "God so loved the WORLD (everybody) that He gave." In his 2nd letter (3:19) Peter wrote, "The Lord does not delay his promise, as some understand delay, but is patent with you, not wanting any to perish but all to come to repentance." People do not come to true repentance, and then not submit. Repentance is literally admitting sin, that you are doing the wrong way, the wrong thing, and then it forces a turn or change in one's life. This is the essence of salvation and it's all about change. Peter is clear that he is calling EVERYONE to this, "ALL OF YOU," the outer ring on the target (the big picture).

Then he zeros in on those who might actually listen to his words by saying, "The one who wants to love life and see good days." Different translations agree on this thought, "The one who desires life, to love and to see good day" or "people who want to live a full life and enjoy good days" or 'for he that will love life and see good days." The thought here is this: "For the one who desires, aspires, or wants a good full life," what follows is how to get it.

What follows are the words of the good and bad of how to attain it.

1) A Charge - Years ago, we sang an old song, "A Charge to keep I have, a God to glorify." When we ordained Ethan to the ministry, included in the service were charges. These words that were given were offered to encourage, help and challenge him to be faithful to the call God had put on his life. Peter is giving us words for our everyday behavior. This reads like a list of qualities required to follow Jesus. "ALL OF YOU BE" like-minded, sympathetic, love one another, be compassionate, humble, and always give a bles ...
