ILLUS. - When sickness enters the home in can sort of take over. - If everyone is sick ... everyone is now, sitting around, watching TV. What you eat is impacted. How much sleep you get is impacted. - It's the culture of the home is not infested with this sickness.
- Similarly, sin has infected humanity. In so doing it has impacted our cities, our governments, our culture. Everything is impacted by this infection called sin. There is coming a day when this infection will be rooted out.
- Scholars of Revelation point out how from here in chapter 17-18 and then in the final chapters you have two contrasting cities. You have what has been called "the city of man" and "the city of God." Babylon and the New Jerusalem. - The city of man ... is infected by sin. It touches everything and impacts the very culture of that city.
- The world as we know it today is not as it will be. - One day the impact of sin will no longer be felt. This world will be rid of sin, a new Heaven and New Earth is to come in which righteousness reigns. - But today ... this world is sinful, broken, marred.
- Here in Rev. 17 we will be introduced to what is named Babylon the great. Babylon was an ancient city, known for idolatry, immorality, wealth. It was also known for persecuting God's people. - John here writes about not literal Babylon ... but an end time one ... one that Rome was a type of ... and the culture of Babylon infects every city, every culture.
Rev. 17:1-18 - Then one of the seven angels who had the seven bowls came and said to me, "Come, I will show you the judgment of the great prostitute who is seated on many waters, 2 with whom the kings of the earth have committed sexual immorality, and with the wine of whose sexual immorality the dwellers on earth have become drunk." 3 And he carried me away in the Spirit into a wilderness, and I saw a woman si ...
