Autoimmune diseases are prevalent health concerns in our day. They are in my family. An autoimmune disorder occurs when the body attacks itself. The white-blood-cells, which are responsible for protecting the body against disease, mistakenly attack healthy cells within the body damaging tissue and organs. Left unchecked and untreated, the results can be disastrous. They can be debilitating. They can even be deadly.
The church, like the human body, is susceptible to autoimmune disorders. The church can harm itself when its members attack, damage, and destroy each other. When that happens, it weakens the church and impairs the effectiveness of the church and its witness.
The church in Corinth, like many churches today, suffered from a self-inflicted spiritual autoimmune disease. They were destroying themselves from within.
- Disorder in the services. A lot was taking place in their services. Unfortunately, it wasn't what should have been taking place. They had turned the church of the living God into their personal playground.
- Doctrinal confusion. Immorality in the pews.
- Division among the people. Their pride, perverted-individualism, constant self-promoting and insatiable desire to ascend the social ladder was destroying the church from the inside out.
The Apostle Paul continues to play doctor as he assesses the spiritual sicknesses within the church body at Corinth. His diagnosis of and prescription for the Corinthian condition becomes a health warning for us. It is a call for us to be aware of what takes place within our faith family and the effect it can have on our spiritual health and our ability to show and share Jesus in our community.
