Text: 2 Corinthians 5:17-21
Introduction:
I have been known to use the phrase, "The gospel changes everything." I could spend weeks, even months explaining this phrase from the Scriptures, however, I am going to key in on just two ways in which the gospel of Jesus Christ makes massive, staggering changes in our lives that affect us now and into eternity.
But first, we have to understand what the gospel is and why we need it. Let me offer a brief definition:
The gospel is the power of God expressed in the birth, life, death, resurrection, and ascension of Jesus Christ to reconcile man to God and unite them in an inseparable relationship that will forever glorify God.
One of the keywords in this definition is "reconcile". Man needs to be reconciled to God, but why? What is wrong with our relationship with God?
The Bible tells us that we were originally created by God to live in a loving relationship with him. But because we chose to live life on our own, apart from God, we have separated ourselves from God and broken that relationship. The Bible calls our rebellion sin, and everyone is guilty.
Romans 3:23 "for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,"
Our sin has wreaked havoc on our world. Sin is the reason for sickness, disease, broken relationships, addiction, crime, war, and every other evil known to man. When we look at the broken world around us we cannot blame God, we can only blame ourselves. From a human standpoint, the broken relationship with God cannot be fixed, we have no hope in ourselves to make things better, the situation is irreversible and has eternal consequences.
