- How do believers make it in a culture that opposes many of our values? - Do you compromise what you believe in order to get along w/ the world around you?
- How do we handle the truth? How important is it? Is false teaching that harms people spiritually a big deal? Should it and those that promote it be tolerated w/in the church?
- These are the types of issues we will see addressed today.
- Today we take a look at three churches ... Pergamum, Thyatira, and Sardis.
- Two of these churches ... Pergamum had compromised the truth, and their Christian values. They had tolerated things God says we should never tolerate w/in the church. One of them, was so far gone it was described as dead. It had a name that it was alive, but it was dead.
- What will Jesus say to the churches of compromise and death? - Here is the thing ... if a church continues to tolerate sin and false teaching ... if it continues to SOW COMPROMISE ... it will ultimately REAP DEATH.
- IF YOU SOW COMPROMISE, YOU CAN REAP DEATH. But there is HOPE if we REPENT ... and when we repent ... we RECEIVE the blessing Jesus wants to give.
Rev. 2:12-17 - 12 "And to the angel of the church in Pergamum write: 'The words of him who has the sharp two-edged sword.
1. Pergamum - We Must Not COMPROMISE the Truth.
- Pergamum - Grant Osborne writes, "... by the first century A.D. Pergamum had become not only an important political center but a major intellectual and religious center as well."
- Mabye most significantly ... Osborne writes "Pergamum was the center of the imperial cult in Asia. It was the first city to be allowed a temple to a living ruler when in A.D. 29 Augustus allowed a temple to be erected to him."
