- What do you think Jesus is like? Nice guy? Quiet? Well mannered? Many have a DISTROTED view of JESUS.
- He's merciful toward their favorite sins, while He's harsh on their least favorite/hated sins.
- For some they love him helping the outcast, the poor. They love him rebuking the hypocritical pharisee. - But they have no room for the Jesus that talks about Hell in Luke 16.
- Today John is going to give us a CLEAR VIEW of the REAL JESUS.
- Leon Morris writes, "... it is only as Christ is seen for what he really is that anything else can be seen for what it really is."
- Understanding who Jesus is gives PERSPECTIVE and adds CONTEXT to every trial, ever temptation, every situation we face as Christ followers. - Who Jesus is life altering.
- The churches addressed had faced difficulty. - As Grant Osborne notes, they "were in a hostile environment from two directions - the Jewish world and the Roman world." They didn't have a good relationship with the synagogues. They didn't want the Christians recognized as connected to Judaism and given an exemption from worshipping the Roman gods. Meanwhile as Osborne notes, "While there was no official Roman persecution, Christians felt a great deal of economic and social pressure to participate in Roman life, including the trade guilds with their idolatrous feasts and cultic practices as well as the imperial cult."
- To a suffering church in a hostile world, John communicates what he saw.
- The church in every generation needs a clear vision of the exalted Jesus.
