Psalms 102:6-7 - "I am like a pelican of the wilderness: I am like an owl of the desert. (7) I watch, and am as a sparrow alone upon the house top."

Pretend you are a counselor. After reading these verses - see if you can figure out what is the problem.
LONELINESS -

A pelican is a sea bird that is suddenly lost in the wilderness. The owl should be in the forest, yet finds himself alone in the desert. The sparrow likes to fly in flocks; not sit abandoned alone on a housetop.

The Psalmist is giving us a picture of absolute loneliness physically, spiritually, and emotionally.

I. Loneliness is a Common Fact

Loneliness is the most devastating disease of this age.

"Don't think of loneliness as some rare phenomenon. Loneliness is the central and inevitable fact of human existence."

We all have it and it's coming, and we can't stop it -- "it is central and inevitable for all of us."

Don't think it's just the widow - alone in her house or apartment. The rich and the famous are lonely

A former U.S. President spoke of the loneliness he suffered while in office.

Janis Joplin - "l'm so very lonely."
H. G. Wells - One of the most brilliant of men of our time said, "I'm the loneliest man in the world."

What is loneliness? Tell you what it is not.

Loneliness is not isolation. Loneliness is not solitude.

Solitude is good. We need to get alone. You can get alone without being lonely. If you are one of these people who can't bear to be alone you've got a problem.

Jesus would often withdraw to the wilderness and get alone. You know why people don't like to get alone? It's because they have to look God in the face and He reveals who you really are. When you get alone with God and lay yourself open and bare - He will show you who you really are.
