Obscure Places
If one were to have passed through Northeast Georgia back in the late 1800's, they might have passed by a little cabin, which was located in an unincorporated area of Banks County. If you looked closely, there was a baby boy born in that cabin on December 18, 1886.
This spot in the road was primarily known as the site of The Battle of the Narrows, between Confederate and Union forces, which resulted in a Confederate victory, which took place in 1864, but that was about it for even giving a thought about Narrows, Georgia, that is until that baby boy begins to grow up, taking a liking to baseball.
The boy was a pretty good baseball player, even playing with his local adult league, located in Royston, by the age of 14 years old. In 1904, the young man signed up to play semiprofessional baseball with a team in Anniston, Alabama. It was about this time, in the year of 1905, that he experienced a great tragedy in his life, his mother shot and killed his father, who was atop the family's porch roof in an attempt to catch her being unfaithful and whom she purportedly mistook for a burglar. That event overshadowed his promotion to the Detroit Tigers later that month.
That young man would spend the next 22 seasons playing outfield for the Detroit Tigers, even hitting a whooping .323 in his last MLB season, at the ripe old age of 41 years old, which is not bad for a kid from Narrows, Georgia, right?
He is known as Ty Cobb, who rose from obscurity to the Baseball Hall of Fame.
