Leviticus 16:6-10, 20-22

Today you and I will once again celebrate the Lord's Supper. As we do so it is imperative we remember the purpose and power behind this most central and sacred act of the Christian walk.
Put simply, The Lord's Supper is about redemption and renewal. This table is about the power of God to lift us from the pit of despair and place us on the mountaintop of hope bathed in the glow of fellowship with the Lord's own heart. This bread and cup are outward symbols of an inward reality that can not only change how we are but who we are. They remind us that if our lives are in the bondage of fear we can stand in the freedom of courage. If our existence is buried beneath the broken rubble of a sin stained past we can be lifted up, cleaned up and reborn. This Lord's Supper shouts that the old can go because something new has come!
The channel through which the power of redemption and renewal is nothing but THE BLOOD. Leviticus 17:11 proclaims it. "For the life of the creature is in the blood and I have given it to you to make atonement for yourselves on the altar; it is the blood that makes atonement for one's life." In the Gospel of John Jesus declares that He is the source of that power of the blood. "I tell you the truth, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you. Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day. For my flesh is real food and my blood is real drink. Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me, and I in him." And First Peter 1:18-19 confirms that Jesus' blood is our only means of salvation. "For you know that it was not with perishable things such as silver or gold that you were redeemed from the empty way of life handed down to you from your forefathers, but with the precious blood of Christ, a lamb without blemish or defect."
