Title: But God (3)
Series: On a Mission-The Life of Paul
Author: Patrick Edwards
Text: Acts 15:36-16:40
Introduction
Do you ever feel like you and God just aren't on the same page? I mean I know the answer; it's not God, it's us. We're not on His page. But I mean maybe you're trying to work through career stuff and the doors just don't seem to be opening. Or a relationship that just isn't panning out as you hoped. Or like for every step forward, it's two steps back. You know, not the times when you know you're being disobedient to God's calling, or you know you're just trying to do your own thing. What I'm thinking of are those times when your heart and your head are in the right place, you really are striving to honor God at home, at work, in the church and it's just not happening, and you can't quite discern why.
Life is full of setbacks. And it can be really discouraging.
Psychology, I wonder how Paul felt at various times in his life and ministry. I guess I just sometimes assume that because he was an apostle that he always had this direct line with God, and even though he suffered and was persecuted, that mentally and emotionally he was always crystal clear about what God was doing. But I think today's passage pokes holes in that theory. Today's passage in chapters 15 and 16 are a series of seeming setbacks and obstacles Paul faced as he left Antioch on his second missionary journey. And yet, for the four major moments we read of this morning we see a bigger thing that God was doing all along.
I believe Acts 15 & 16, therefore, offer us not just insight into the expanding mission of the Gospel and the church into Europe but remind us of God's faithfulness to His perfect purposes and His grace to get us to exactly where He wants us to be.
