Title: And Also to the Greek (1)
Series: On a Mission-The Life of Paul
Author: Patrick Edwards
Text: Acts 13:1-14:20
Introduction
I don't think I'm rocking the boat this morning in pointing out how selfish and self-involved kids can be. I mean adults are that way too, but hopefully with a little maturity we learn to not give in to every selfish instinct. Kids, however, just do what comes naturally. I tell you, my kids. Never content with what they have, each one is always convinced the other is getting more than them. Whether it be a bowl of ice cream after dinner, or the amount of Christmas presents under the tree, they are constantly sizing the other up.
Charley, my daughter, will get so mad when she senses her older brother getting to do something she is not. Or Aiden will get so jealous when we start to do something with his younger sister that used to be just for him. Little things, like screen time or bringing them fast-food for lunch at school. It's never enough for them to just receive and enjoy something. They have to make sure they're the only one getting that thing; that they are special, and their sibling is not.
Isn't it funny, human nature? The idea of someone else getting something bothers us. It rubs against that inherent selfishness within the fallen human soul. I get a COVID relief check for me and my two kids; well, that family with four kids got more! That's not fair. Who cares that I'm receiving something; what we want is not just that thing but no one else to get it too.
This morning, we return to the book of Acts, where we spent our fall in a series called "Unstoppable." There we followed the birth of the first church and how Jesus, by his Holy Spirit, continued the mission of bringing healing and salvation to this broken world. You hopefully remember the core verse of our series was Jesus' promise from Acts 1:8, But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come on you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, ...
