Title: The Secret to Greatness (32)
Series: Luke
Author: Zach Terry
Text: Luke 9:37-48
INTRODUCTION: This is a good time in our study of the Gospel, According to Luke, to remind ourselves of the overlaps between the story of Christ and Moses. Remember, we said that Moses and Elijah spoke with Christ about His Exodus on the Mount of Transfiguration.
- Remember the Exodus? We see Moses leading the Israelites through the Red Sea (which is called their Baptism) into the wilderness for 40 years until he ascends to Mount Sinai, where he receives the Law of God. He descends from the Mount, and what does he find? The people worshipped the Golden Calf in the most lascivious ways.
- Now consider the story of Christ up to this point - We have seen his Baptism, then His journey into the wilderness for 40 days, last time we were together, he ascended the Mount of Transfiguration, now he descends to find a boy possessed of a demon.
Incidentally, there are many overlaps between Idolatry and Demonic Oppression. Remember that Paul said, in 1 Corinthians 10:19-20 (ESV)
19 What do I imply then? That food offered to idols is anything, or that an idol is anything? 20 No, I imply that what pagans sacrifice they offer to demons and not to God. I do not want you to be participants with demons.
Both Moses and Jesus descend from the Mountain to confront a demonic infestation. Luke presents Christ as a true and better Moses.
CONTEXT: This story can be found in the three synoptic Gospels - Matthew, Mark, and Luke. They are called Synoptic because they share 90% of their information, while John is highly unique. Matthew, Mark, and Luke placed this account immediately following the transfiguration.
Mark tells us that the situation began with Jesus overhearing an argument between his disciples and the scribes. The disciples of Christ had been asked to cast a demon out of a young man but could not do so. The scribes wanted to know why, if they had such authority ...
