1 Corinthians 3:10-17
In life we build and construct a number of different things.
- We can build actual structures, like houses, sheds, decks, or furniture.
- We can build or make works of art like sculptures or paintings.
- We can make clothes, quilts, or cross-stitch.
- We can build businesses, brands, and the networks necessary to grow and sustain them.
Some of you are like me and are pretty sure that God skipped over us when He was handing out talents and skills. Even if you are like me and have never really built anything in your life, you are building something with your life...and that matters. Additionally, we are building something together here...and that matters.
Everyone in this room is a builder.
Both of these building projects, that of your life and this church, are related. Whether we are talking about our life or this church, we want to build something of significance and worth. We want to build something of lasting value. To do that...
- We must build on the right foundation.
- We must build with the right materials.
- We must build the right way.
- We must build for the right reason.
This is what Paul tells the Corinthians believers and us as he shifts from an agricultural metaphor to a construction metaphor. Paul had just likened his work in the church to that of a servant working in the fields of his master. Now, he likens his work in the church to that of a builder constructing a house or temple.
1 Corinthians 3.10-17 - According to the grace of God, which was given to me, like a wise master builder I laid a foundation, and another is building on it. But each man must be careful how he builds on it. 11 For no man can lay a foundation other than the one which is laid, which is Jesus Christ. 12 Now if any man builds on the foundation with gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, straw, 13 each man's work will become evident; for the day will show i ...
