ILLUS. - Some stories inspire us - You may watch a sports movie that has an inspirational team spirit to it. You think ... "let's go ... I want to join a team and win something." Sometimes you hear a story and think ... "Wow, look at all they overcame, I need to stop complaining." Stories can inspire us, motivate us. - But stories can also expose us. - They can show us our NEEDS. They can show us how far short we fall. They can expose tendencies in our own heart. Maybe we see ourselves in particular character ... and we see our flaws. Stories can wreck us. Sometimes they both wreck and inspire.
- Today's parable is extremely well known. It's the Parable of the Good Samaritan.
- This is a powerful, convicting parable. - This story shows us what being a "neighbor" really looks like. It shows us how far short we fall of it. It implores us to follow Christ in how we love others. - It's a powerful story.
- Personally, I don't think anyone reads this passage and feels like a spiritual giant, like the greatest lover of people out there, super neighbor. - No, you probably read it and go ... Wow. Help me, Lord. - This story should convict us, show us our need for Jesus, and implore us to greater love for both God and neighbor by God's grace.
Luke 10:25-37 - 25 And behold, a lawyer stood up to put him to the test, saying, "Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?" 26 He said to him, "What is written in the Law? How do you read it?" 27 And he answered, "You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind, and your neighbor as yourself." 28 And he said to him, "You have answered correctly; do this, and you will live."
