ILLUS. - Jesus parables are memorable, and many may have their favorites. But there is one in particular with a SONG ... and HAND MOTIONS. - Maybe that should be our invitation today! "The wise man built his house upon the rock ... the wise man built his ... and the rain came down and floods came up ..." - You get it. - We know this parable.

- Of course I'm talking about the parable of the builders. - The wise builder ... and the foolish builder.

- The parable of the two builders is in both Matthew and in Luke. It comes at the end of the Sermon on the Mount and in Luke some see this as Luke's version of the Sermon on the Mount, and some as a separate but similar sermon and they title it the Sermon on the Plain.

- While this is a simple parable ... and we sing children's songs about it ... it is a parable with profound spiritual truth. Jesus chose to end the Sermon on the Mount with THIS parable. - It's a short parable with a big message. It's a singable story, but is profound truth.

Luke 6:46-49 - 46 "Why do you call me 'Lord, Lord,' and not do what I tell you?

Everyone who comes to me and hears my words and does them, I will show you what he is like: 48 he is like a man building a house, who dug deep and laid the foundation on the rock. And when a flood arose, the stream broke against that house and could not shake it, because it had been well built. 49 But the one who hears and does not do them is like a man who built a house on the ground without a foundation. When the stream broke against it, immediately it fell, and the ruin of that house was great."

- Jesus follows up His great sermon where he gives us things like the beatitudes ... and tells us to love our enemies ... with this parable. What is the stress ... what is the main point of what Jesus is saying here? He is emphasizing the importance of putting His Word into practice.
