ILLUS. - People will do extreme things for treasure won't they? - We see treasure hunting movies where people go to great lengths and personal sacrifice to attain valuable treasure, or things they deem valuable. We think of Indiana Jones, National Treasure and movies like this.
- We implicitly understand that some things are valuable and that elicits a response. People will go to great lengths to possess things of value.
- A movie about trying to find something random and of now value ... that would not be interesting or believable. Indiana Jones in search of someone's watch ... who cares. It only makes sense if there is VALUE. Typically in our movies it's what ... financial value. We live in a world where people value money, many love it ... some worship it.
- Today Jesus tells a story about finding TREASURE, finding something of VALUE. The point is about the value, the treasure ... that is the Kingdom of God.
- Jesus wants to show the SURPASSING VALUE of the Kingdom. - The Kingdom of God is not something neutral. It is something incomparable in value to anything else. - The Kingdom of God demands a response.
- Knowing God, knowing Christ, being forgiven, being God's child, having God reign in your heart and life ... being in the Kingdom ... the Kingdom itself ... is of incalculable value. - That demands something ... it stirs something.
- What we are not to do is look at the Kingdom and SHRUG. We are not to simply go on as normal with our lives. Listen to Jesus' two short parables about this ...
