Text: 2 Timothy 3:1-13

If you have your Bible, please turn to 2 Timothy chapter 3. That's the last letter that the apostle Paul ever wrote before he was martyred for his faith, beheaded under the persecution of Nero.

I heard a story years ago about a Roman elite, a senator, a guy with lots of power and wealth. He had a son, and he had a slave. He was disappointed in the son. He was very happy with his slave. He called his son and his slave. Son's name was Gracus. His slave was named Marcellus. And he called them both to his bedside as he was getting ready to die. And he told his son, "Listen, son. You've been a great disappointment to me. And I just want you to know that I'm leaving everything of my vast wealth to my faithful slave, Marcellus." And he said, "But I have made provisions in my will, that you can have one thing from my will." And so the son said, "Well, thank you, father." What do you say to that? He said, "Let me think about what I would choose." And the father dies, and then the executor comes, and there is the son and there is Marcellus, the slave. And he reads them the report, and says, "This is the will of your father, that everything goes to Marcellus, his faithful slave, and that you get one thing in his vast wealth." And he says to the son, "So, what will it be?" He said, "Well, if my father's leaving everything to Marcellus, and I just get one thing, I'll take Marcellus." That was funnier than I thought. Anyway, this leads me into the well-worn phrase, "To be forewarned is to be forearmed." Hey, when you know what's going to happen, you can get yourself ready to deal with it.
