What does the Sovereignty of God really mean?

Sovereign means supreme power, controlling influence, supreme authority.

I don't want to get into a discussion concerning the Sovereignty of God vs the free will of man. That's not the issue.

The purpose of this message is to help us understand who God is in relationship to Himself and to man and to all creation.

I Chronicles 29:10-12 - "Wherefore David blessed the LORD before all the congregation: and David said, Blessed be thou, LORD God of Israel our father, for ever and ever. (11) Thine, O LORD, is the greatness, and the power, and the glory, and the victory, and the majesty: for all that is in the heaven and in the earth is thine; thine is the kingdom, O LORD, and thou art exalted as head above all. (12) Both riches and honour come of thee, and thou reignest over all; and in thine hand is power and might; and in thine hand it is to make great, and to give strength unto all."

In the Old Testament, we read of the struggle against idolatry -- against the polytheism of idolatry -- or the worship of many gods. Everybody believed in the existence of many gods.

Each country had its gods. Every tribe had its own special god. That was the nature of things and nobody questioned it until the prophet declared:

Deuteronomy 6:4-6 - "Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God is one LORD: (5) And thou shalt love the LORD thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might. (6) And these words, which I command thee this day, shall be in thine heart:"

God is the King, Maker, Ruler of the earth.

And out of the confusion of universal idolatry came the growing insight of monotheism -- one God.

Why has not this idea laid hold upon our minds in practical behavior; why have we not one mind, one throne, one God, one world?
