If you have your Bible, please turn to Luke chapter 24. We want to talk about The Transforming Power of the Empty Tomb.
Theologian Harold Hoehner wrote a book called, The Chronological Aspects of the Life of Christ. And in his book, he studies all the different proposals for when Jesus was crucified, and he gives you all the possible dates. And he comes up, at the end of his chapter, with this date: April 3, 33 A.D. Nearly 2,000 years ago was Passover weekend in Jerusalem. In the life of Jesus, He knew it was coming. After He had the last supper with His disciples on Thursday night, they went to the Garden of Gethsemane. And, remember, in the garden He prayed, and He sweat drops of blood, and three times, "Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from Me; nevertheless, not My will, but Yours be done." And then He was arrested. Judas led the soldiers there to arrest Jesus. They took Him to the High Priest, and they had this mock trial that was a travesty of justice. Jesus was arrested. He was tried. He was beaten. He was taken to Pilate. Pilate pronounced the decree, "Let Him be crucified," even though he knew He was innocent. Pilate had Him scourged. If you want to know how bad that was, watch The Passion of the Christ. Mel Gibson gets it right, how horrible, how awful it was to be scourged. Jesus was marred, the Bible says, more than any man. And then He was taken from there, made to carry His cross to a hill called Calvary, and there He was crucified between two thieves. At 3:00 He breathed His last. He said, 'It is finished! Father, into Your hands I commit My Spirit." And He breathed His last, and He died. And the Bible says that the chief priests went to Pilate, and said, "Hey, we need to take these guys off the cross because the Sabbath is coming." And so, they were going to break the legs of Jesus.
