I ran across this statement in my preparation, "Any idiot can be complicated. It takes a genius to be simple." There is definitely some truth in that. People have the innate ability to complicate things. (Have you ever seen the assembly instructions for a basic bookshelf)? The more complicated something is, or the more complicated it is made to appear, the more confused, frustrated and discouraged we become.
In some ways, that is the church in Corinth. They were confused about most everything and therefore frustrating to the Apostle Paul. They had corrupted and complicated life in the church. Paul writes praying he can brush away the confusion by bringing them back to the simple but powerful message of the cross.
As we move into chapter 2, Paul continues the line of thought and argumentation he began in chapter 1. Remember, the chapter and verse divisions we see in our Bibles were added at a later date to help us in reading and studying God's Word. That's why the and section breaks in your Bible may seem out of place and artificial at times.
1 Corinthians 2.1-5 - And when I came to you, brethren, I did not come with superiority of speech or of wisdom, proclaiming to you the testimony of God. 2 For I determined to know nothing among you except Jesus Christ, and Him crucified. 3 I was with you in weakness and in fear and in much trembling, 4 and my message and my preaching were not in persuasive words of wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power, 5 so that your faith would not rest on the wisdom of men, but on the power of God.
