Ransomed from Futility
Rev. Ronald H. Matthews
I Peter 1:17-23
4/18/99
In today's lesson, Peter uses a powerful image that rivets our attention. He says we have been "ransomed." We have all heard this word and most likely think of a person who is kidnapped being ransomed and set free. To be ransomed means to be delivered, rescued, released, liberated and it requires someone being willing to PAY the demanded price for the hostage.
It is basic Christian theology that every one of us stand guilty as charged, when it comes to sin. During our Tuesday Bible Study of Romans, we learned of what many evangelists call "The Roman Road" to salvation. The Apostle Paul's letter to the Romans includes a number of verses which describe the human condition and the process of understanding that evolves in our Christian experience.
1. There is no one who is righteous, not even one: (Rom 3:10)
2. All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God. (Rom 3:23)
3. Sin came into the world through one man, and death came through sin, and so death spread to all because all have sinned. (Rom 5:12)
4. The wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. (Rom 6:23)
5. God proves his love for us in that while we were sinners Christ died for us. (Rom 5:8)
6. If you confess with your lips that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him for the dead, you will be saved. (Rom 10:9)
Do you remember the OT story of the Israelites as captives in Egypt? After many signs, God promised one final, mighty act that would bring them freedom. The angel of death would pass through the towns of Egypt slaying the firstborn son in every home. The Israelites protected themselves by sacrificing a lamb and painting its blood on the door. That blood was the sign, the guarantee, the bond, that the angel of death would "pass over" their homes. The children of Israel were ransomed by the blood of an unblemished lamb.
