Open to Gen. 4. We're looking at one of the most famous and saddest stories of Scripture, the day Cain killed his brother Abel. The title of the message is 'Killing Sin Before It Kills You'. I took that from what an old-time preacher named John Owen said: "Be killing sin, or sin will be killing you." Sin is every single person's greatest problem because it separates us from God now and sets us on a course of unbelief which separates us from God forever. And yet, do you know what a growing number of people in American churches want to hear least about in sermons and bible studies? Sin. Maybe you can feel that in your own mind and heart this morning. 'Sin, again? Why do we have to focus on something so negative?' Because God does. He repeatedly warns us throughout Scripture of the catastrophic dangers of sin and compels us to fight against sin with all that we have. Still, many don't want to listen. You can see happening over the years with preachers people listen to. There was a day when America's favorite preacher was Billy Graham. He talked a lot about sin. Now America's favorite preacher is Joel Osteen. He never talks about sin. But since Joel isn't here today, we're going to talk about it. It is one of the main threads that weaves through Genesis chapter four.
- Gen. 3: Sin introduced. God gives consequences-pain childbirth, frustrating work, death.
- Gen. 4: We see every single one of those consequences of sin come to light.
V1: "Now Adam knew Eve his wife, and she conceived and bore Cain, saying, "I have gotten a man with the help of the Lord." This is the first-born child in history. Adam was created out of dust. Eve was created out of Adam. Adam & Eve are sexually intimate just as God commanded them to be, and Eve conceives and gives birth. She names him Cain, which means 'He's here!' Who?
