Turn to Genesis 2. Our text today focuses on the creation of Eve and the covenant of marriage. If you've gotten a brand-new car recently, you know that it can be very complicated to figure out. There are a lot of things going on in a new car these days. One of the best ways to help understand and figure it out is the owner's manual from the maker of the vehicle. The manual shows you how to utilize the features on your car and how to get the most out of it. What if you're reading the manual and it says to use regular or premium gas as fuel, but you think to yourself, 'They are colluding with the big oil companies to make more money. I think my car will run just fine if I fill it with water, or windshield wiper fluid, or Dr. Pepper?' Do you have a right to do that? Of course. It's yours. But what's going to happen? You're going to end up with some serious problems. You shouldn't be surprised when it doesn't run right and breaks down altogether.
In general layman's terms, God has given us a manual for marriage. He knows how it operates best because it's His invention. Marriage is God's idea, not man's. But what has happened? We've tried to tweak it and change it to fit our desires and way of life. Like that new car with a full tank of Dr. Pepper, we shouldn't be surprised when doesn't run properly and gives us endless trouble.
You've heard it said that a river is purest at its source. That is certainly the case with the marriage covenant given by God to men and women. In Genesis 2, we have the source of marriage. This is the ideal. What we have is the first perfect marriage. We're going to see that it didn't last long. Sin came in a messed everything up.
