Open your bibles to Genesis 1. If you're new to the bible, it's page one. Today we are starting a brand-new study through the book of Genesis. Genesis is packed with relevancy. It hits on the topics of identity, gender, sex, marriage, family, work, grief, heartache, murder, mystery, obedience, worship, deception, love, lust, faithfulness, blessings, and so much more. It's as fresh and relevant as the day it was written 3,500 years ago. But don't let all of those subtopics get you distracted from the main topic: Genesis is primarily and preeminently about God.

If you're wondering about the big idea of today's message, here it is: Nothing makes sense unless you begin with God. The world, your life, your marriage, your family, your career, your failures, your achievements, your purpose, your eternity...none of it makes sense unless you begin with God. Before we dig today, let me give you three clarifying thoughts that I think can be helpful.

1. Genesis is Culturally Controversial.

There is not a more debated book in all the bible. Why? Because it is the foundation on which everything else is built. The first verse of the first chapter of the first book might be the most debated bible verse in our culture today: "In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth."

Skeptics, atheists, evolutionists, doubters, and unbelievers have all taken aim against the opening verse and the first few chapters of Genesis. They think it's absurd to believe in the existence of God, a six-day Creation, a literal Adam and Eve, a talking serpent, a Garden of Eden, original sin, Noah and the Ark, and the Tower of Babel. Unfortunately, many well-meaning, underinformed Christians have bought into these attacks to the detriment of their faith.
